Xero Launches Ultra Plan to Help Growing Australian Businesses Skip Costly ERP Systems

News

Xero has launched a new subscription tier called Ultra in Australia, designed to give medium-sized businesses access to advanced financial tools without forcing them onto a full enterprise resource planning system. The company announced the plan this week, pricing it at $500 per month including GST. Xero says the move targets a specific gap many growing businesses fall into: too complex for basic accounting software, but not yet ready to pay for the cost and disruption of an ERP platform like Oracle or SAP.

Angad Soin, Xero’s managing director for Australia and New Zealand and global chief strategy officer, said the plan reflects how differently scaling businesses operate compared to smaller ones. He noted that companies eventually reach a stage where their existing tools can no longer keep pace with them, as they face more entities, more transactions, and a greater need for oversight. Xero Ultra is built to meet that stage directly, rather than pushing customers toward unfamiliar enterprise software.

Filling the Gap Between Small Business Tools and Enterprise Software

For years, businesses that outgrew entry-level accounting platforms had limited choices. They could either stretch their existing software beyond its intended use case or migrate to enterprise-grade systems that entail steep costs and lengthy implementation timelines. Xero Ultra is positioned as a middle path, letting businesses stay on a platform they already know while unlocking capabilities usually reserved for larger organizations.

This approach matters because switching accounting systems is rarely simple. Data migration, staff retraining, and workflow disruption all add real cost beyond the software price tag itself. By expanding within its existing ecosystem, Xero is betting that familiarity will outweigh the appeal of a dedicated ERP provider.

What the Xero Ultra Plan Includes

A modern visualization of the Xero Ultra Plan featuring AI financial automation, personalized onboarding support, secure data restoration, advanced reporting dashboards, connected business apps for payroll, payments and inventory, and flexible user permissions for growing businesses.

The Ultra tier bundles several features aimed squarely at businesses managing rising financial complexity. Subscribers get access to Syft Advanced reporting, which supports multi-entity consolidated reporting, scenario modeling, and four-way cash flow forecasting powered by AI-driven insights. Xero Ultra customers also receive:

  • Priority access to Xero specialists, including personalized onboarding and migration support
  • A targeted data restore service that fixes specific errors without a full file rollback
  • Access to Just Ask Xero (JAX), the company’s AI financial agent for automating routine finance tasks
  • Entry to Xero’s network of more than 1,000 connected apps covering payroll, payments, and inventory
  • Flexible user permissions for stronger governance, expected to roll out shortly after launch

These additions are meant to give finance teams more control and visibility as their operations scale, without requiring them to abandon Xero’s existing interface and workflows.

Early Users Report a Smooth Transition

Xero ran a beta program before the public rollout, giving select businesses early access to Ultra. Damien Wragg, director of Trainwest, was among the participants and said the platform kept pace with his company’s growth without forcing major process changes. He described the experience as scaling effectively alongside the business, something he noted isn’t always guaranteed with financial software.

That kind of feedback is central to Xero’s pitch. Rather than positioning Ultra purely as a technical upgrade, the company is framing it as continuity, a way for growing businesses to avoid the friction that typically comes with switching platforms.

Accountants and Bookkeepers Have a Stake Too

Types of business technology including cloud computing, collaboration tools, automation systems, retail technology, healthcare technology, and legal technology platforms.

Xero isn’t only marketing Ultra to end businesses. Accounting and bookkeeping firms are also part of the pitch, since clients who outgrow standard Xero plans have historically had to move to different platforms, often taking their advisory relationship elsewhere. Ultra gives practices a way to retain those clients by offering more sophisticated reporting and multi-entity support within the same system they already manage.

Soin said advisors play a critical role in helping businesses navigate growth stages and framed Ultra as providing them with the tools to support more ambitious clients without losing those relationships to competing platforms.

Part of a Broader Shift Toward AI-Driven Finance Tools

The Ultra launch follows Xero’s recent integration with Microsoft 365, which brought its JAX assistant into the Microsoft ecosystem. Together, these moves point to a wider strategy centered on AI-powered workflows and deeper platform connectivity, aimed at retaining businesses across different growth stages rather than losing them to larger competitors as they scale.

Xero Ultra is now available across Australia, with flexible user permissions expected to follow in the coming weeks as the company continues to roll out the plan’s full feature set.
